Auxiliary

B

Band banquet
Annual end-of-year banquet for band students and families. Typically held in May; tickets ~$30–35.
Band camp
Two weeks of intense daily (Mon–Fri) marching band practice.
Band Boosters
See Boosters.
Band Captain
Student leader; occupies a seat on the Leadership Council. Top student position.
Band Librarian
Student leadership role responsible for filing, copying, distributing music, and cleaning the library.
Band Quartermaster
Maintains order of instruments, band/percussion rooms, and loads equipment for competitions/away events.
Band Sergeant
Leadership Council role; assists Drum Major, Band Captain, and section leaders.
Band Uniform Chair
Helps pass out uniforms and manages returns.
Bandgram
Message sent to a student/section/instructor; offered by hosting band at competitions.
Battery
Marching band percussion that carries drums and marches: snare, bass, quads.
Bibbers
Marching band pants; school-provided.
Black socks
Required marching uniform item — students supply long black socks (no white socks/skin showing).
Blue barrel
Locked drop-box in Mr. Black's office for fair share payments. Only Booster treasurers can open it.
Boosters
Parents/guardians who support the band programs.

Caption awards
Awards a band can win at competitions ("Best Music," "Best Percussion," etc.).
Chaperones
Parents accompanying students at events. PCS requires 1 chaperone per 10 students; must be registered volunteers.
Class
FMBC band classes by field size: 1A (1–45), 2A (46–69), 3A (70–99), 4A (100–145), 5A (146+).
Classic
Annual competition hosted by East Lake Band Boosters.
Color guard
See Guard.
Competitions
Saturday events with area marching bands. Bands compete within their class. All-day events; tickets $15–20.

DCI
Drum Corps International. College-age professional-level summer touring bands and guards.
District 9
FBA district for Pinellas County, Florida.
Drill
Steps and positions in the marching show.
Drill book
Notebook/cards holding each student's drill.
Drum major
Student conductor(s) directing the marching band; top officer position on Leadership Council.
Drumline
Entire percussion section: front ensemble + battery.

Fair Share
Money each student is asked to raise/pay to offset band operating costs.
FBA
Florida Bandmasters Association.
Flags
Used by guard during the show.
Flip folders
Held by lyres clipped onto instruments.
FMBC
Florida Marching Band Championships.
Front Ensemble
Stationary percussion: marimbas, vibraphones, timpani, xylophones, gongs, etc.

G

Gauntlets
Wrist/lower-arm uniform covering; school-provided.
Gloves (Guard)
Tan gloves to protect hands when catching flags/rifles/sabers; member-purchased.
Gloves (Marching)
Black gloves for wind players; member-purchased.
Guard
Students who provide visual interest through costumes, dance, flags, rifles, sabers, props.

High Brass
Trumpet, mellophone, French horn.

I

Ice Breaker
Annual spring event for 8th graders and families to learn about Silver Sound.
Instructor
Booster-hired personnel assisting various sections.

L

Leadership
Student leaders: drum major, band captain, guard captains, band sergeant, section leaders, quartermaster, librarian, uniform chair.
Leadership Council
Senior student leadership: drum major, band captain, guard captain(s), band sergeants.
Low Brass
Trombone, baritone, euphonium, sousaphone, tuba.
Lyre
Attaches to instrument to hold music.

Marching season
July (band camp) through November.
MPA
Music Performance Assessment. Superior-level performances qualify for state.

Paperwork
PCS forms required for band participation.
PCS

Pit

Plumes
Feathered portion of marching hats; fragile, school-provided.
Podium
Folding platform for the drum major.
Props
Visual show pieces; volunteers help build each year.

Quads
4 connected drums carried by a battery member.

Regionals
Determines which bands advance to state finals.
Rifles
Wood rifles used by color guard.
Run through
Practicing the show start to finish.

Sabers
Swords used by color guard.
Sections / Sectionals
Instrument-based subgroups; students rehearse with section leaders.
Section leader
Upperclassman in charge of a section (upper woodwinds, saxophones, high brass, low brass, battery, front ensemble).
Setup crew
Volunteers moving props/instruments onto the field.
Shadow
Visiting middle schoolers can shadow an ELHS band/engineering student.
Shako
Marching band hat; school-provided.
Shoes (Guard / Marching)
Member-purchased.
Show
The performance piece learned at band camp and refined through marching season; has a yearly theme.
Show shirt
Annual t-shirt with show name, year, and artwork.
Sign Up Genius
Software for volunteer signups.
State
State championship competition.

T

Teaching Intern
College student working with the band director for a semester.
Trailer
Holds uniforms and large instruments; loaded by the loading crew.
Tri-M Music Honor Society
NAfME program recognizing musical/academic achievement. East Lake's chapter was chartered in 2013. Eligibility: A average in music, C average overall, currently enrolled in music, and faculty recommendation.

W

Winds
Non-percussion: any instrument played by blowing air.
Winter Guard
Guard without the marching band. December–March; competitions typically Feb/Mar. Open to all students. Separate fair share.
Woodwinds
Piccolo, flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone.
